Frequently Asked Questions
Aroma-Taste Technology for Dietary Supplement Packaging
Why ScentCerts?
Why ScentCerts?
The opening moment is where your customer-acquisition investment either pays off or fades. ScentCerts bring sensory science, aroma delivery, and packaging expertise into one platform, purpose-built for brands that understand the opening moment is not a packaging detail — it is the consumer experience. ScentCerts deliver a controlled, premium aroma each time a product is opened, turning that moment into an intentional first impression that reflects the quality inside the bottle.
My product has no smell. Do ScentCerts still apply?
Yes — and this is now a primary growth opportunity. ScentCerts were originally developed to address off-notes in complex supplement formulas, but a large and growing share of new brand interest comes from products with neutral or no scent. Consumers increasingly expect a sensory experience when they open a premium supplement. A product that opens with a controlled, premium aroma feels more premium and creates a stronger brand memory than a product that opens in silence. If your product currently has no aroma, ScentCerts create a considered opening experience your formula alone does not provide.
What about products with off-notes or unpleasant ingredient aromas?
This is where ScentCerts began, and it remains a core capability. Botanicals, fish oil, minerals, proteins, and functional actives all carry aroma signatures that can work against a premium brand positioning. ScentCerts replace those impressions with a controlled, premium aroma at every opening, from first use to last.
How ScentCerts Work
Why does aroma matter so much for supplements?
Smell is processed through the limbic system — the part of the brain associated with emotion, memory, and preference. Because a large majority of what we perceive as flavor is delivered by our sense of smell rather than taste alone, aroma shapes how a product is experienced. ScentCerts deliver a controlled, premium aroma every time a product is opened, turning a routine use occasion into a positive sensory experience that consumers associate with your brand.
How do ScentCerts work?
ScentCerts are made with all-natural aromatic flavors incorporated into a food-grade, food-contact compliant polymer. By design, they release a controlled, brand-enhancing aroma into the headspace of the package over the product's shelf life, so consumers experience a premium aroma at every opening. Aroma release is the intended function of the technology; the release mechanism is passive and requires no activation.
Why are ScentCerts effective at addressing supplement malodors?
Supplement malodors are driven by active ingredients — fish oil, valerian, and vitamin B are among the most aggressive — and they typically intensify as products oxidize over time. ScentCerts were developed through years of R&D targeting these malodors, using proprietary flavor formulations and polymer science. They continue releasing a pleasant, controlled aroma throughout the product's shelf life, keeping the opening experience consistently premium.
How do ScentCerts perform over a product's shelf life?
ScentCerts are engineered to deliver a stable, consistent aroma throughout a product's stated shelf life, so the opening experience stays premium from first use to last. ScentCerts are an aroma-delivery technology, not a preservative, and are not positioned as extending a product's functional shelf life. Where a specific performance benefit is observed for a particular application, it is evaluated and substantiated for that application rather than claimed as a general feature.
Taste & the Opening Moment
How do ScentCerts affect taste perception?
A large majority of what we perceive as “taste” is in fact driven by aroma — a well-established principle of sensory science known as retronasal olfaction. When a product opens with a premium aroma, that signal reaches the brain and shapes how the product is perceived when it is consumed. ScentCerts use this mechanism deliberately: the controlled aroma delivered at the opening moment influences the perceived sensory experience, without any change to your formula. This is a perceptual effect created by aroma, not a reformulation of your product.
How does the opening moment fit into a brand's overall quality strategy?
The opening moment is the first sensory event a consumer controls and experiences directly — before the product is ever consumed. For most supplements, that moment is accidental: whatever aroma the formulation happens to produce. Treated intentionally, it becomes an ownable signal of quality that sets expectations for everything that follows. ScentCerts ensure that moment reflects the same standard of excellence your organization applies to formulation, manufacturing, and quality systems.
Products & Formats
What is the difference between TABS, HEARTS, PAKS, and DUO PAKS O₂?
TABS and HEARTS are injection-molded with encapsulated flavors — premium, distinctive formats available in translucent colors. PAKS are flavor-encapsulated polymer beads in a Tyvek pouch, available cut or on spools for automatic insertion. DUO PAKS O₂ combine aroma delivery with moisture absorption in a single insert, placed at the same point as an existing insert with no added production step.
What flavor profiles are available, and can they be customized?
ScentCerts are available in a range of all-natural flavor profiles including Lemon Zest, Citrus Grove, Lemony Mint, Peppermint Twist, Eureka Mint, Berry Blast, Berry Minty, Purenilla, Violet Cream, Cool Beans, Mandarin Spice, and Citrus Fusion. Custom aroma profiles can also be developed around your formula, your flavor system, your brand positioning, and the specific consumer moment you want to own. Custom profiles are available across ScentCerts formats and can be matched to your packaging format, production process, and regulatory requirements; custom development is available for qualifying volume accounts.
What types of supplement products do ScentCerts work with?
ScentCerts work with capsules, softgels, tablets, and gummies. They are effective for products with aggressive malodors — fish oil, valerian, vitamin B, NAC, MSM, garlic oil — and equally effective for neutral-scent products where the goal is to create a premium branded opening experience.
Materials & Compliance
What are ScentCerts made of?
ScentCerts are made with all-natural flavors incorporated into food-grade, food-contact compliant copolymers. The flavors are all-natural, FEMA-GRAS, Non-GMO, vegan, Kosher, and Halal. (FEMA/GRAS status applies to the flavoring substances for food use and is one input into the overall compliance picture; it is not a status conferred on the finished article as a whole.)
Are ScentCerts made from compliant, food-contact materials?
Yes. Both the flavors and the polymer base are selected as food-grade materials intended to meet applicable U.S. and EU food-contact requirements. ScentSational maintains food-contact and analytical documentation supporting the materials used, and provides compliance statements for a defined product and intended use. We are glad to support your regulatory team's due diligence with the relevant documentation for your specific application.
Will ScentCerts interact with our ingredients or affect efficacy?
ScentCerts are designed to release a controlled aroma into the package headspace using food-grade, food-contact compliant materials. They are not intended to alter the formulation, function, or efficacy of your product. Because aroma release is the intended function of the technology, ScentSational maintains analytical and food-contact documentation and can support your due diligence for your specific formulation, package configuration, and conditions of use. As with any packaging component, we recommend confirming suitability for your particular product with your regulatory and quality teams.
Do we need to change our packaging label?
In the United States, a labeling change is generally not required, though the appropriate position should be confirmed for your specific product and intended use. In the European Union, depending on how released flavor is treated for your product, a flavor reference or ingredient declaration may be required on the finished product. Because requirements vary by product category and jurisdiction, we recommend confirming the correct approach with your regulatory team, and ScentSational can provide flavor-specific information to support that determination.
Are ScentCerts produced at quality-certified facilities?
Yes. ScentCerts are manufactured at ISO-certified, GMP compliant facilities operating to defined quality-management standards. These certifications reflect manufacturing rigor and quality-management discipline; where a customer requires a specific food-packaging or GFSI-recognized certification, we will disclose our current certification scope candidly and support supplier questionnaires and traceability requests.
Implementation & Cost
Can ScentCerts be automatically inserted on a packaging line?
Yes. PAKS and DUO PAKS formats are designed to fit standard desiccant autofill machines and are available cut or on spools for high-speed automatic insertion. TABS and HEARTS are compatible with some desiccant canister auto-inserters; minor modifications may be required depending on equipment configuration.
Do ScentCerts absorb moisture?
Standard TABS, HEARTS, and PAKS are aroma-delivery inserts only and do not absorb moisture. DUO PAKS H20 combine aroma delivery and moisture absorption a single insert.
How long is the shelf life of ScentCerts themselves?
ScentCerts maintain their aroma profile and intensity for a minimum of five years from the date of manufacture when stored sealed in original packaging in a temperature-controlled environment not exceeding 95°F. Aroma performance once placed in a supplement package will vary based on packaging type, active ingredients, and storage conditions.
How should we think about the cost of ScentCerts?
Think of ScentCerts not as a cost-of-goods line item, but as an investment in ensuring the quality your organization has already created is fully recognized by the consumer you worked to earn. Brands invest significantly to acquire each customer, and sensory experience is a meaningful driver of repeat purchase and loyalty. ScentCerts typically represent less than 1% of a supplement brand's consumer-acquisition cost per unit, and they work at every opening for the product's full shelf life. The math is direct: a fraction of acquisition cost, applied at every use occasion, reinforcing the trust that acquisition spending was designed to build.
The Experience Standard™, published by ScentSational Technologies, frames the strategic case: organizations have mastered creating quality; the next opportunity is ensuring consumers fully experience that quality. ScentCerts is the mechanism through which the quality inside the bottle becomes the experience at every opening.
What are the minimum order quantities?
MOQs are 5,000 units per flavor for TABS and HEARTS. MOQs for PAKS and DUO PAKS formats vary by size and format type — contact our sales team for details specific to your production requirements.
The Experience Standard™ — Strategic Quality Framework
What is The Experience Standard — and what does it mean for our brand?
The Experience Standard™ is a thought-leadership publication by ScentSational Technologies examining how evolving consumer expectations are redefining what “product quality” means in the dietary supplement industry. Its central argument: organizations have mastered creating quality; the next competitive opportunity is ensuring consumers fully experience that quality. Consumers do not observe formulation science or manufacturing discipline — they experience the finished product, and they form impressions from what they see, smell, and taste before efficacy can be evaluated.
*“Organizations create quality. Consumers recognize quality through experience. This is The Experience Standard.”*
The publication draws on the principle of sensation transference — the well-documented finding that impressions formed from a product's sensory and packaging cues transfer onto the product itself, influencing how good consumers believe it to be. Aroma and taste, designed intentionally, become bridges between scientific excellence and consumer experience. The Experience Standard is available at scentt.com.
Our product is scientifically excellent. Why does the consumer experience matter on top of that?
Scientific excellence and consumer experience are not in competition — they are two halves of quality as consumers actually encounter it. Consumers rarely experience technical excellence directly; they experience the finished product, forming impressions from what they see, smell, and taste before any benefit can be evaluated. The Experience Standard™ distinguishes acceptability (removing the dissatisfaction that would prevent use) from preference (building the positive experience that reinforces continued use, habit, and loyalty). ScentCerts move products from acceptability to preference by designing the opening moment to consistently reflect the quality the organization has worked to create.
Common Questions About Supplement Smell, Taste & Experience
Do ScentCerts improve consumer compliance?
Poor smell and taste are a significant driver of supplement non-compliance — consumers stop using products they find unpleasant. ScentCerts improve the sensory experience at every use occasion, and brands frequently report improved consumer feedback and fewer odor- and taste-related complaints. The Experience Standard™ frames the mechanism: products consumers prefer to experience are more likely to become part of daily routines, so a positive opening moment reinforces the habit rather than creating friction against it.
Why do fish oil supplements smell so bad — and what can brands do about it?
Fish oil malodor is caused by oxidation of omega-3 fatty acids. As the product ages, these compounds break down and release increasingly aggressive fishy odors that worsen each time the bottle is opened. ScentCerts HEARTS and PAKS are formulated to address fish oil malodors, replacing that impression with a controlled, premium aroma at every opening. Brands frequently report improved consumer feedback on odor and taste as a result.
Activated charcoal
Absorbs certain large-molecule malodors. Does not add aroma or contribute to a premium opening experience.
Silica gel desiccants
Absorb moisture and some moist odors. Do not add aroma or contribute to a premium opening experience.
Gelatin capsules
Intended to limit release of malodors, but often ineffective. Do not add aroma.
Flavor coatings & ingredients
Require a secondary production process and can be prone to oxidation; do not deliver a comparable, controlled opening aroma.
Scented canisters
Limited by existing canister materials and size, so aroma delivery is constrained relative to ScentCerts.
Ordinary scented desiccants
Primarily designed to absorb moisture and deliver only a fraction of the aroma ScentCerts are engineered to provide.
Why do prenatal vitamins smell like fish — and what can brands do about it?
Prenatal vitamins containing DHA derived from fish oil are among the most common sources of fishy-odor complaints in the supplement category. The omega-3 content oxidizes over time, producing increasingly aggressive malodors. ScentCerts placed inside the bottle continuously release a pleasant, premium aroma — mint, lemon, or citrus — that replaces the fish-odor impression at every opening. Prenatal brands using ScentCerts frequently report a shift from negative odor-related reviews toward positive feedback praising the scent.
Can bad supplement smell cause consumers to stop taking their supplements?
Yes — and it is one of the most underappreciated drivers of supplement non-compliance. Consumer feedback consistently shows that smell and taste are common reasons people abandon supplement regimens: an unpleasant product creates a negative association, so consumers dread opening it, skip doses, and ultimately discontinue use. ScentCerts turn the opening moment from a negative trigger into a positive sensory cue, supporting consistent daily use and repeat purchase.
Why does my supplement smell bad even when it's new?
Even freshly manufactured supplements can have strong odors — the active ingredients themselves are the source, not age or spoilage. Fish oil, valerian root, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine), MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), vitamin B complex, and garlic oil all carry aggressive natural odors present from day one that intensify as the product oxidizes. ScentCerts address this from the first opening, delivering a controlled, premium aroma that replaces the malodor impression throughout the product's shelf life.
How do ScentCerts differ from activated charcoal, silica gel, or flavor coatings in supplement packaging?
Activated charcoal absorbs certain large-molecule malodors but adds no aroma. Silica gel absorbs moisture and moist odors but adds no aroma. Gelatin capsules are intended to limit malodor release but are often ineffective and add no aroma. Flavor coatings require a secondary production process and can be prone to oxidation. ScentCerts Aroma-Taste Technology actively delivers a controlled, premium aroma at every opening for the full shelf life, while remaining compatible with existing bottling and packaging infrastructure — converting the opening moment from a functional event into a positive brand signal.
How quickly do ScentCerts start working in a supplement bottle?
ScentCerts begin releasing aroma immediately upon placement in the bottle. Consumers experience the aroma profile at the first opening and at every subsequent opening throughout the product's shelf life. The release mechanism is passive — no activation required — and is designed for consistent, stable aroma delivery.
